Mealtime: Taqueria

Sometimes I go through cravings for tacos, enchiladas, burritos, mole, and other Mexican delights. I am spoiled with the amount of good Mexican food in the States. The issue is that over here in Tel Aviv, Mexican food is not something that Israeli society has embraced like American society. I have been to Mezcal and thought it was extremely overpriced for the amount of food they serve per portion. The taste was not bad, it just was not what I was looking for. I have also been to Donkey for their burritos. While their burritos were delicious, there was something that I was missing from the experience. It was time to try another Mexican restaurant here in Tel Aviv. Taqueria is located at 28 Levontin Street just south of Yehuda Halevi. I went to Taqueria having no real expectations of how the food was going to taste. A friend of mine accompanied me and we shared all of the plates we ordered. First we ordered chips and guacamole. The guacamole was decent, but good have been better for sure. Next was a spicy chicken quesadilla. The quesadilla was good, but lacked in the cheese department. We then ordered carne asada( grilled beef) tacos, and fried fish tacos. Each taco plate came with two which was perfect for us because we could at least have one of each. Another cool thing is that you could choose between flour or corn tortilla for the tacos. We chose corn tortillas because they taste better. The carne asada taco came with all of the fixings on top, including a delightfully spicy salsa. I like the fried fish taco the most. That came with shredded cabbage and guacamole. The best part about the fried fish taco was that the batter did not come completely off when you took a bite. This kept the integrity of the fish in the taco so you did not get a mouthful of fried batter. There is outdoor seating available and I suggest you take advantage of it because it is nicer in my opinion to eat outdoors. The prices for each item was a little too much for what they were serving, but in Tel Aviv most things are more expensive so there is nothing for me to complain about. Overall, Taqueria is a cool place for Israelis to experience Mexican cuisine, Americans looking for their taco fix, or anyone in Israel that just wants to have a different dining experience. Enjoy!!
