Walking along Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem you would expect to find shops selling Judaica, souvenirs, cafes, falafel and shawarma joints, and coffee shops. The last thing that you would expect to find is a fish and chips shop that also sells poutine. There is such a place on Ben Yehuda Street called Fish Bar that serves great fish and chips, but also poutine. For those of you that do not know what poutine is, it is Canadian dish made of french fries and cheese curds covered in gravy. It is a typical dish from Montreal and it is mostly consumed after a night at the bar or partying. I was with my Canadian friend Mike and we saw that the Fish Bar looked promising. Once we got inside to order, Mike and I were amazed that they offered poutine. We had to order the poutine because its freaking poutine. Many people outside of Canada really do not know what it is. We were amazed that it was even on a menu in Jerusalem of all places. We learned that the owners were from Toronto originally so it made sense that they would offer some Canadian comfort food. The poutine itself was good, but nothing like the Canadian version of the dish. Instead of cheese curds, they used melted cheddar or american cheese. Even though it did not stack up to the Canadian version, it was still delicious and filling. What a meal to have on a nice day on Ben Yehuda Street in the hear of Jerusalem.
