Mealtime: Sabich

The variety of food options here in Israel are endless. From street food to sit down restaurants, Israel has a lot to offer. When it comes to street food there is a selection of dishes for the eater to try. There are the staples such as Shawarma, Falafel, and Hummus. There is one street food option that is unique to Israel which is called Sabich. Sabich is a pita sandwich brought to Israel by Iraqi Jews. Sabich features pre-cooked fried eggplant, hard boiled egg, Hummus, Amba(a pickled mango sauce) Israeli salad, Tehina, and potatoes. Since most of the ingredients are ready to be eaten, it is a typical meal served on Shabbat by Iraqi Jews. It is a delicious sandwich that is unique to Israeli cuisine. Many Falafel and Shawarma stands offer Sabich as well so it is very easy to find. I hope you try Sabich once while you are in Israel. It is completely and for the vegetarian who is tired of falafel, Sabich is a good way to mix things up. Enjoy!
