Mealtime: Malawach

During my time here in Israel I have discovered many new foods. One of these foods is Malawach. Malawach is a traditional Yemenite bread. It is very similar to puff pastry and is made by creating many layers of the dough. It is traditionally fried in a pan on both sides until both sides are golden brown and delicious. It served with a fresh tomato sauce made by grating fresh whole tomatoes and a sliced hard boiled egg. You may also have cream cheese with your malawach. Even though it is a traditional food from the Yemenite community, many Israelis eat it whether they are Yemenite or not. Personally, I love Malawach. For the most part, you can kind ready to make Malawach in the Freezer section of any grocery store here in Israel. I am really glad I got to try and make this unique dish. I have not seen Malawach back home in the United States, but you maybe able to find it in the kosher section of the freezer section or a kosher grocery store. If that does not work, you can use frozen puff pastry and cook it in a pan with a little bit of oil. בתאבון!
